that As travelling vegetarians we love exploring the world and finding the most delicious, colourful and interesting veggie food we can! Gone are the preconceptions that vegetarian food is bland, dull and boring, here we have put together a post with a whole host of other travellers proving that the world is full of exciting vegetarian and vegan dishes to discover in every corner of the globe!
Firstly…What we have discovered:
Garlic Soup in a bread bowl – Bratislava
What’s not to love about the idea of eating a hearty and rich traditional Slovakian garlic soup out of a bowl you can eat! Ripping bits of the bowl off as you go this meal will fill you up for the day and allows veggies to taste some Slovakian cuisine in what can sometimes be quite a meat dominated area. We headed to the aptly named “Slovakian Pub” in Bratislava for this delicious example!
Zapiekanka in Poland
The zapiekanka was a chance find in the most wonderful city of Krakow but it has since become a passion of ours. #zapiekankaforlife! This humble but immensely tasty street snack is a huge piece of bread baked with mushrooms, cheese and a choice of toppings, we went for feta, crispy onions and BBQ sauce! Head to “Plac Nowy” in Krakow for the best around, they are insanely cheap too!
Vegan Pizza in Budapest
We were initially worried about finding places to eat in Budapest, but we needn’t have been as the city has many amazing veggie friendly places. But we made a special visit to the all vegan Napfenyes for their famous pizza! We were not disappointed. They also serve a variety of other all vegan dishes and get very busy too!
Best vegetarian food in our home city of Manchester:
V revolution – Northern Quarter
Vegan junk food! Everything in here is 100% vegan and so amazing too! Hotdogs, burgers, shakes, you name it, they have it!
Changos Burrito Bar – Oxford Road
Best burritos in town by a mile and the veggie one is packed full of flavour. I actually have dreams about these burritos when haven’t had my fix in a while!
Little Yang Sing – China Town
If you are after the best veggie chinese food around then Little Yang Sing is the place. They have the most extensive vegetarian versions of all your favourite chinese dishes out there complete with fake prawns, beef and chicken!
Other places of note include:
PieMinister, Infamous Diner, Almost Famous Burgers, Moose Coffee, Chiquitos, Tampopo, Mowgli, and Chaophraya.
Vegetarian BBQ in New York’s Chinatown!
The barbecue vegetarian meat dish at Buddha Bodai One Kosher Vegetarian Restaurant—whew! that is a mouthful!—in NYC’s Chinatown has to be one of the most amazing vegetarian dishes ever! Made with mock meat, it is chewy and delectable, and my fellow diners and I finished it off lickety-split. Had I been blindfolded, I would have said it was meat. In fact, it was MORE delicious than a barbecue meat dish and had the satisfying taste and texture of fat. BTW, the entire dim sum menu is delicious and well priced. I look forward to returning to this exceptional vegetarian restaurant next time I am in town for a repeat.

Mujadara at Litani’s, Wollongong, Australia
Every morning we walk to Litani’s Lebanese Café in the city, where we live – Wollongong, Australia. We go there because it is fun, multicultural and has great coffee. Occasionally we have breakfast here, and this is where I tried Mujadara. Mujadara is a Lebanese rice dish, which is made with lentils, brown rice, onions, and garlic. It is flavored with hints of cumin, cayenne, and cinnamon, making it in a superfood, because it has so many of the really good foods in it. I had the Mujadara with eggs, mushrooms, hummus, yogurt and tomatoes. That is one very good vegetarian dish.

Mixed Lentil Salad at Green Park Dining, Melbourne, Australia
Chilaquiles, Mexico City
This dish is called chilaquiles, and is a specialty in Mexico. This specific photo is what I’m told is the best chilaquiles in Mexico City, and I most certainly cannot argue! It’s a mixture of tortilla chips, cheese, veggies, and sauces, tailored to exactly how you want it (well, if you can speak the language enough to order it in the precise way you want it…) It’s absolutely delicious, I mean how can you go wrong with all those ingredients smothered in sauce and cheese?! …sorry Vegans.

Daal bhat, Nepal
We fell in love with daal bhat in Nepal so took a cooking class in Kathmandu to learn how to make it.
“Daal” means lentils and “bhat” means rice. A Nepalese Daal Bhat “set” is commonly served as a large plate filled with little pots of culinary surprises and is a staple food in Nepal. It’s eaten everywhere, usually twice a day. These pots usually comprise:
– Daal: lentils soup
– Bhat: rice
– Tarkari: spicy vegetable curry (sometimes a meat curry is also included)
– Sabji: a mix of spicy vegetables cooked with curry flavours
– A spicy sauce
– Achar: pickled vegetables
We love it because there is no one uniform recipe and each one is always different, with a variety of different spices and just as delicious each time.

Rajasthani Rabodi, India
When I arrived in India, I realised that all the Indian dishes I had eaten in the past were either a heavily tweaked European version that had nothing to do with the original or weren’t even something that Indians would cook on a regular basis. Amongst all the new and exciting curries I have tried, my absolute favourite was Rajasthani Rabodi. The best I have eaten was in Jodhpur, the blue city. It is a dish made entirely out of yoghurt and the consistency is a bit like Pasta.The Rabodi, thick yoghurt cooked for hours, is dried for days on the Indian rooftops before it is finally cooked with several spices to create this incredibly delicious and unique dish.

Five Elements’s Sakti Dining Room, Bali
Nachos, Atlantic City
My daughter and I ventured over to Atlantic City one year after a spring break trip to NYC. The Revel Hotel, Atlantic City’s newest and most expensive casino ever built was having a soft opening on the day we arrived. They had many food options but a Mexican food truck, made from a converted Airstream camper caught my attention with their Lite-Brite designed menu. I ordered these awesome vegetarian nachos and to date, they are still one of the top 10 things I’ve ever eaten. The thing that pushed them over the top were the pickled radish strips across the top; what a game-changer they were. Absolutely delicious!
Masala Dosa in Little India, Singapore
I became a bit addicted to eating Masala Dosa when I lived in Singapore. This stuffed pancake made from lentil and rice flour is a southern Indian delicacy that has been happily adopted by Singaporeans. The crisp yet moist pancake is packed with a satisfying filling of potatoes, fried onions and spices and best enjoyed by tearing it apart with your fingers and dipping it into the accompanying sambar (spiced vegetable stew) and coconut chutney, and washing it down with a cup of teh halia (ginger tea). Little India is the obvious place to head for your dosa fix in Singapore, with Komala Vila’s being my favourite vegetarian joint.

Coconut, rice and beans, Costa Rica
Caribbean food in Costa Rica is so bursting with flavour it’s unbelievable. Their signature dish is coconut rice and beans, a traditional Tico dish but stewed in coconut milk which they get fresh by cracking open coconuts with a machete. We ate this hearty plate of rice and beans, carrot and ginger veggie stew and lentil burgers at La Botanica Organica at Playa Chiquita in Costa Rica, which is just down the coast from the popular town of Puerto Viejo. We later learned to cook coconut rice and beans ourselves at a vegan cooking class in town.

Vegetarian/Vegan version of Pabellón Criollo, Venezuela
Veg Thukpa, India
The best vegetarian dish which I ever had was in Rishikesh, India. The dish was Veg Thukpa – and I was having it for the very first time in my life. Thukpa is basically a Tibetan clear noodle soup. Although it is a Tibetan dish, it is widely available in Northern region of India. I devoured this super dish while a cool breeze from The River Ganga made me shiver in the cold weather of Rishikesh. What I loved about it is that, this hot-spicy noodle soup is filled with the goodness of vegetables and it’s perfect for the cold climes of winter . This dish is a must try even if you are a vegetarian or not.

Stuffed portobello mushrooms in Brighton, UK
Bibimbap, South Korea
Bibimbap is a Korean dish of rice topped with vegetables and an egg. I basically lived off of this when I was in South Korea but it’s remained a favourite meal to eat out, even now I live California. Many versions come with meat but it’s easy enough to ask for it without. You can also find meatless bibimbap in temple restaurants and specialty bibimbap restaurants, which usually have several different vegetarian options. You could even go eggless to make it vegan. Bibimbap is served with a spicy red pepper paste. You can add as much or little as you like before mixing the sauce, vegetables and rice together. It’s usually eaten with a spoon, rather than chopsticks. My favourite is dolsot bibimbap, which is served in a stone bowl with a raw egg. When you mix it together the egg cooks in the stone bowl making the rice nice and crispy.

String Hoppers, Sri Lanka
One of my favourite breakfasts in the world, I fell in love with on my most recent trip to Asia, in Sri Lanka: the vegetarian dish of String Hoppers. String Hoppers are parcels of goodness made out of rice meal or wheat flour. Forming small discs in a stringy texture that resembles spaghetti, the hoppers are cooked together tightly. Traditionally hoppers is served with “Daal”, a creamy thick stew made out of pulses which you dip onto your parcel, finally topping it up with a generous portion (depending how much spice you can handle) of Coconut Chilli Sambal. Although sounding like a quite an unusual breakfast, it really is delicious. As most Sri Lankan’s eat with their hands, you eat this dish as they do, using the hoppers as a shovel to the sweet vegetable daal, topping it up with a bit of spice and flavour with the sambal.

Papaya Salad, Koh Lipe Thailand
Shine Juice Bar, Orillia Ontario
When I travel to small towns in Ontario I always worry about what types of restaurants will be available. As someone who has adapted a clean eating approach to life, travel can be quite difficult. So on a trip to Orillia Ontario a small cottage country city, I was surprised to learn about Shine Juice Bar. Opened by two passionate foodies who tried a vegan and raw detox this amazing little small town restaurant is full of surprises. We enjoyed a special evening celebration in their self-made “Alley Patio” during one Starry Night in Orillia. The memorable first course (of the 5 course tasting menu) was this “crab cake.” In fact, it wasn’t until I had almost devoured the entire thing when I realized there is no crab in this dish because I was at a Vegan restaurant! The “Hearts of Palm Crab Cake” was a delicious start to an incredible gluten free, raw and vegan tasting menu!
Sukh Sagar restaurant, Bangalore
Paired with a cup of filter coffee, these tempting fried puff-pastry balls (puri) stuffed with a mixture of Indian spices, Boiled potato, Sauces and Yogurt (dahi) takes your taste buds on a roller coaster ride. The mild flavor of potato and yogurt get a kick from the strong spices and the tangy & sweet tamarind sauce.
A Bangalore must-eat, we had to taste it when we visited India few months back and got to enjoy it at Sukh Sagar restaurant in Kammanhalli market. Garnished with fried Vermicelli (sev), grated Carrot, Beetroot and fresh Cilantro – this melt-in-the-mouth, colorful, light and packed-with-a-punch snack is a great way to enjoy the lovely evenings in the city.
Shan Ge in Taipei
I am just back from Taiwan where I had the good fortune to visit an exceptional vegetarian restaurant. Shan Ge in Taipei specializes in beautifully presented multi-course set meals. For me, the wowser dish was the first one—which arrived after a finger bowl that looked, itself, good enough to eat—a creamy chestnut and red dates soup with truffle bits. It was divine.
