Greece and surfing might not be two words that go together commonly with many of the islands being pretty sheltered. However the country does get some strong winds which makes for some incredible swell. Surfing is still a developing sport in Greece but that means that the best beaches for catching the Greek waves are still pretty quiet and not overcrowded. Given the summer winds kitesurfing and windsurfing are much more common here. Some of the best spots for beginners are Tinos and Lemnos with shallow sandy bottom waters and nearby surf schools. Other good areas for surfing around Greece are Ikaria, Karpathos, Messinia, Kos and Crete.
Another less intense activity is sea kayaking which is available all over the islands and is a great way to explore the coast, discovering hidden coves and secluded beaches.
