When we headed to Berlin, a bucket list destination we can’t believe it took us this long to visit, we just knew we had to stay somewhere special to mark the occasion! Now at this point we’ve stayed in some pretty weird, wonderful and wacky accommodation across our 61 countries and over that time our enthusiasm for staying in hostels has in fact only got stronger. That is mostly due to the fact that we keep finding the most amazing examples of just why hostels give you so much more, their unique design and unrivalled experiences keep us coming back for more! On the hunt for the most exciting hostels out there we came across the Eastern Comfort Hostel Boot in East Germany… yes, that’s right, a hostel boat! Ahoy mateys, it’s all aboard for a fun filled ride on the Hostel Boat in Berlin!
A unique experience floating on the river Spree on the Hostel Boat in Berlin!
We love travelling on boats, in fact, through out Asia we actually spent quite some time on some pretty long boat rides, 8 hours in the Philippines, 2 days between Thailand and Laos and arriving at our hostel in Myanmar on a traditional fishing boat! We love them! But we’ve never actually stayed over in on, or ever expected to be heading up the plank to lay our heads in a hostel on a boat of all places! The Hostel Boat in Berlin was just something we had to check out!
Built in 1991 under the name of “Frederick the Great” the boat started life with the intention of being a push boat for the Potsdam passenger ship company White Fleet serving the German Channels and rivers. Instead it was forgotten and sat aside for years before being bought and turning initially into a hotel and later into the hostel boat we see today!
Staying in a fascinating environment
Stepping on the gangway straight away you get a unique feeling of staying on a boat rather than just any normal hostel or hotel, it really does feel quite surreal! Everything about the hostel is tailored to the experience and is of course totally authentic. The round window in the cabins, the water lapping up at the side of the hull as you gently rock to sleep, the captain greeting you upon your arrival. It all combines to great one unique travel experience that will stick in your mind for years to come! Staying on a Hostel Boat in Berlin is quite unforgettable!
East Berlin: The coolest area of the city to call home
Not only is the hostel boat one of the coolest ideas in the world, but of course, it has to be docked in the coolest area of one of the worlds most cool cities! East Berlin, once hidden behind the iron curtain, a secret world beyond the wall of a totally different way of life. Today East Berlin is the beating heart of cutting edge counter culture, it’s were the best parties happen, the most revolutionary ideas are cooked up and some of the world’s best and most meaning full street art is on display. Staying on the Hostel Boat in Berlin means being at the heart of the cool end of town!
The Berlin Wall. A one time symbol of isolation, fear and suppression. Whose images of destruction beamed across the world was transformed into a beacon of hope, a icon of freedom and unity, stand but meters away from the hostel boat. From our portholes we could see the backside of this immensely emotive structure, a metaphor for people power the world over, quite a few to wake up to. Each morning we would begin our day strolling up and down the iconic East Side Gallery, a reminder of the past, present and future of both Berlin, Europe and our world before taking the short walk over to the U-Bahn station into the city.
A ship shape hostel equipped for all sailors!
The word hostel can sometimes seem to only appear to backpackers, but on the contrary, the hostel boat at Eastern Comfort is designed for all those who step aboard. From deck hands who might bunk down below deck in the multi person dorms to large open en-suite cabin fit for a captain and everything in between. The Eastern Comfort Hostel Boat makes sure to create the perfect, ship shape, environment for all travellers as well as providing great socialising areas too.
