As we are about to set off on our world trip this weekend, butterflies fluttering around in our stomaches, full of nervous excitements, doubts and worries we thought to ourselves just how easy it would be to put this dream on hold. How easy it has been to tell everyone we are going travelling but it always feeling so far in the future! But now is crunch time, the point in which we put our money where our mouths are and we go for broke. Dreams are sometimes something that feels so far in the future that we almost forget to go for them. So many people put it off, get scared or make excuses…but NOW really is the time to make your dream a reality, because time waits for no man!
You are the youngest you will ever be
It’s a scary thought really, but life goes by so fast and whether you are 21 or 65 today is the youngest you will ever be and you are only getting old with each passing day! Days, weeks, months and years have a habit of flashing by in the blink of an eye. Some day becomes next year, 5 years time and eventually never. As they say…”Some day is the place dreams go to die!”. Not only that but the younger you are the more able you are to do all those crazy things like Paragliding, White water rafting, carrying around a huge backpack and walking for miles! Don’t leave it until you need a hip replacement, heart bypass and blood pressure pills!!
The future is promised to no one
Following on from the idea of putting your dreams off for “someday” is the idea that the future is promised for non of us. Life is a strange beast and we really never know what is around the corner, we could live to 99 or get ran over by a bus tomorrow, diagnosed with cancer next week or have a heart attack next year. To put your dreams off for when you retire or “when you can” whenever that is, is to play a huge gamble. But to go for it NOW always leaves you will the option to settle down later!
The world is changing and becoming more globalised
As the world becomes more and more globalised, people travel more and the internet and television influences more and more people the world changes. Cultures are disappearing, countries are opening up and landmarks are being lost. Wait too long and that place you dreamt of visiting might not be quite what you expected! That wonderful culture you wanted to immerse yourself in might have been over taken my americanisms and modernity! Get out there before the world changes!
As time goes on your dreams fade
Often what happens when you shelve your passions is that they eventually get forgotten, you make excuses to settle for second best and overcome with denial. The response we get the most often to our plans is “I wish I could have done that, but now I can’t”…bullshit! You have just resided yourself to the fact that you have taken the easy way out, sitting at home is easier than overhauling your life and making these crazy dreams a realty! Allowing yourself to make excuses instead of being brutally honest is to allow your dreams to fade!
Your career can wait, your life can’t
I never understand people who put their career before their passions, working away your days for someone else rather than building a life around the things that you love! The people who are out there living amazing lives and making money doing it are generally the people who followed what they love and crafted a career around that rather than trying to fit in a life around a crippling job. You’ll never know what opportunities are out there unless you go for it!
You will regret what you didn’t do more than what you did!
This is generally the motto that we live our life by. Most often than not making opportunities, taking chances and giving things a go isn’t what you regret. But sitting at home and wondering, wishing and hoping is how you end up crippled with regret. Sometimes things are scary, they push you out of your comfort zone and into the unknown…but often these are the things that are the most worth while doing. I have to tell you that I was absolutely bricking it heading up the mountain in Interlaken to go paragliding…it would have been so easy to make an excuse not to do it! But I know I would always regret wussing out on what was high on my bucket list… in the end, it was one of the best things we have ever done in our lives!!
But think about it. That day when you look back on your life will you remember all the exciting experiences you went through exploring the world? Or those times you spent working tireless hours as you stared at the clock, waiting so you could go home, watch some TV and relax before repeating the exact same thing the very next day.
There is never a “right time”…You’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner!
One of the problems that we are all guilty of is saying we will wait until the “right time”, the problem is that the right time often never comes. There is always another month you could wait to save up, another few weeks for this or that! But before long those weeks and months turn into years waiting for something that doesn’t exist! Sometimes you’ve just got to jump in at the deep end and make sure you paddle! Have faith in yourself and give it the best go you can…you might just surprise yourself!
Every day spent thinking about travel, is another day you are stopping yourself from going on an adventure, another day you could have been out there living your dream!
You will gain experiences that will stay with you and help your for the rest of your life…whatever you do!
Still thinking about your career? Well even if you want to come home back to the grind having a year or so travelling will actually improve your chances! You will have experiences under your belt that most people don’t even know exist! You might have worked 20 different jobs gaining countless skills rather than just grinding it out in the same job just as every other candidate! You stand out as someone willing to push the envelope, go outside your comfort zone and who has the ability to think on your feet and cope with any and every situation! Travelling will provide you with so much more than just amazing memories and experiences!
Travel opens our mind and allows you to experience life in a totally new way!
Even if you can’t go NOW…you can start TODAY to put those dreams in motion
OK, so being realistic we know more than anyone else that sometimes you actually can’t just take off right here and now…you might have kids, a mortgage, contracts, debts or still be studying! But that doesn’t mean giving up or putting it off, oh no! Whatever your situation you can begin making the steps towards that moment when you can set off today! it has taken us well over a year to save up, sort out renting our house and getting everything in place. But that day we put that all in motion has built up to this moment now…setting off to travel around the world this Saturday coming! Reevaluate your priorities and take that first step!
What do you think, put off your dreams for the “right time” or do it now!
What are you waiting for?
