2016, it’s going to be the biggest year in the history of the Roaming Renegades. No doubt that 2015 has been unforgettable, but this is the start of something big, something exciting and in all honesty, something scary too! This is goodbye to our old life and hello to a new way of living. From March 2016 we will be travelling full time, quitting our jobs and becoming officially nomadic! Here’s the first leg of our journey!
Why: Mortgaged and working full time
Why? Ultimately the why lies in the fact that we don’t want to put off our dreams for “retirement”, we want to live our lives now. We don’t want to be tied down, told how to live our lives by a boss or bank manager, we want to call the shots on our own lives. The 9-5, normality, self limiting safety nets, 2 weeks a year vacation… it all adds up to you giving your life up for money and someone else’s profit.
I could go on and on about why, in fact it has become a real passion of ours and all began during my MA in 2013. If you want to read up a little more then check out some of these posts:
Partially with blind faith and partially with sheer determination. We have overcome difficulties, we have rented out our house, moved back home and scrimped and saved. At times this dream felt a million miles away, but now it feels ever closer and ever more real. This desire to seek out new places, to have real adventures, forgetting fear and living for now!
How will we go on when we are out there? Who the hell knows, that’s the fun of it but also the scary part! Will our money last, will we hack the pressures, will it live up to our dreams. The only way to know is to go out of our comfort zone and give it a go! We have travelled a lot and also have a great circle of traveller and blogger friends too…so we feel pretty confident! Sometimes the most important thing is your outlook!
Where are we going? Where aren’t we planning on going!
We have a route we plan on taking but this is in no way set in stone or even inclusive of everywhere we want to see. This route is a rough guide, we will be diverting, off roading and spontaneously changing plans at every corner! We will also be seeking out off the beaten track locations, local knowledge and alternative sights…but of course we also want to see the tourist spots too!
From the alternative quarters of Berlin to the slopes of Austria, the sheer cliffs of Italy and the mountainside of Slovenia, the stunning fortified cities of Croatia and the recovering streets of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the churches of Bulgaria and the misunderstood ex-soviet states…Europe still has a lot in store for us despite being our home continent!
Crossing into the unknown world of Russia, strolling through Red Square and gazing once again at St Basil’s cathedral before hopping on board the Trans-Mongolian express! Wandering the epic landscape and mysterious towns of Siberia, the wild lands of Mongolia with its nomadic tribes and awesome vistas before finally entering China, the country we have wanted to explore since we can remember!
Asia, the culture shock we are searching for. Beginning in China we will camp on the great wall of china, explore the forests and national parks and gaze up at the sky scrapers of it’s great cities. Then we finally get to see what all the fuss is about South East Asia; The temples, beaches, countryside, cities and villages! We can’t wait to fully immerse ourselves in this fascinating and beautiful region. Then of course comes another dream destination of India, to finally see the Taj Mahal, the holy city of Varanasi and the temple of Jodhpur!
Finally we will end up in Australia, the land down under which we have always wanted to explore, the bohemian city of Melbourne (and of course the Neighbours sets!!), the perfect white beaches and the mysterious Uluru! We will be getting a working tourist visa so will have plenty of time to explore! Then of course the end of the first leg…New Zealand! The home of hobbits, the adventure capital of the Southern Hemisphere and an opportunity to visit family whilst being the furthest from home we have ever been!
That’s 45 countries and around 32419.03 miles!! Wow!
Over to South America…
To read a little more about our plans and destinations then check out an earlier post we did lastr!
Well, of course even this overland multi year adventure is just the first step in the rest of our lives. What we want to do after is something that we don’t want to set in stone, but we do have some ideas! We will have TEFL’s and would love to spend more time in countries such as Japan and Switzerland. We also want to explore South America and the USA in detail as well eventually Central Asia and Africa…and maybe even settle down some day in New Zealand or Switzerland!
So, who knows where we will end up! But the plan is never to get trapped into a 9-5 or office job again. To be free to travel when we want or have a base for a few months. The plan is a life of adventure…the exciting bit is not knowing!
You can do it too!
We will be posting updates as March gets closer such as: What we are packing, insurance, money…and more as we think of them! So you can realise just how easy it is to do the same! We have a mortgage, jobs, hell we are even married! But if you want something bad enough you will find a way! And in the end, the work you had to put in to make that dream a reality will make you even more grateful when you are free!
What we want from you!
OK, so this is where you come in. Just as we report back on our adventures, discoveries and trips with advice and reports we want the same from you! Have you been backpacking, have you been to any of these countries…where should we make sure and see, what do we need to make sure we take with us?? Hit us up with some advice or post a link to your blog below if you have a relevant post!
