Some of the aims I set out this year included climbing and leading more and eventually doing a multi pitch route. We have plans to head out to Snowdonia in Wales towards the end of April to complete the classic 8 pitch mountain route “Grooved Arete” up Tryfan. The climbing on this route is supposed to be relatively easy going, but of course for us being our first multi pitch the logistics are our main concern.
In the last week in April we are heading off to Wales for the weekend to complete our first multi pitch route, in preparation for this and to continue our goal of leading more we headed off to the classic gritstone trad location of Almscliffe for a great day out in the sun.
With this in mind we have been trying to get out on the trad routes more recently in order to both get back into the trad mindset both for this trip and for summer after a winter of pulling on plastic and also to gain more knowledge and confidence with placing gear/ protection and setting up belays and anchors.
We had the day off work and the sun was shining. What a great day to be out climbing! It really felt like spring was here at last and we managed to lead a challenging route each as well as seconding up some great lines. What was important was to take our time with the gear and also watch Ben place his and set up his belays. I feel that this trip out has given me a boost in confident in both my ability to lead and place gear but also in the mental challenge which that brings.
I now look forward to getting in some more practice and also training before heading off into the mountains and cannot wait for the challenge ahead. I hope to get out doing more trad and mountain route over the summer and hope this is the start of many adventures to come. Trad is something I never really thought I would love after how it was described to me, but after a few trips out it is fast becoming my favorite form of climbing. However I do love a bit of bouldering and we finished the day of on many of the quality boulder problems spread about by the crag.
