Hong Kong is massive, bigger than you could ever imagine, or we ever did! Hong Kong isn’t just a city but an entire administrative region that incorporates many areas, islands, beaches and even mountains. So choosing where to stay in this dramatic and contrasting city can be hard. But one thing is for sure, you want to be in the thick of the action to make sure you don’t miss out on a Hong Kong second! Staying in the heart of Kowloon offers you the chance to easily experience all Hong Kong has to offer with action and excitement all around you but also convenient links to the rest of the city. In Urban Pack hostel we found just that, an amazing hostel with endless facilities and opportunities for adventure in what turns out to be one of our favourite cities!
The ultimate location in the centre of the city
When you think of Hong Hong you think of Kowloon, the centre of the city in more ways than one. The place where you will find anything that you could ever imagine and the area of the city that most reminds me of New York. This area is not only a cauldron of activity, lights and sound. But it is also a transport bus, from here you can take the train to (or from in our case) mainland China, get the airport bus that takes less than an hour, stroll on to the subway or walk over to the ferry terminals. It really is the perfect location for both hanging out and exploring but also to make heading out to the rest of the city easy.
A short walk from the harbour and the unforgettable HK skyline
One of my favourite things about being so close to the harbour was the view from Tsim Sha Tsui promenade, especially at night. It was walking along here that truly made us fall in love with this crazy city. When the skyline lights up you could be forgiven for thinking this couldn’t possibly be a real place. After spending a month in China Hong Kong felt like a theme park. Choreographed light shows and music flashed across the harbour as we stood in awe. Every night we were able to just wander down here and sit back and take it in due to how close Urban Pack is to TST!
An array of facilities and opportunities
The hostel might be spread over several levels and even in two buildings but this just means that there is even more of it to explore. In this area of Hong Kong space is at a premium and Urban Pack have utilised this to create different areas of the hostel in which to hang out in and to house different facilities. Some areas just have the dorms and modern well maintained bathrooms, this means they are quiet and peaceful for a good nights sleep.
Others are more social settings with couches, tables, games, computers and movie facilities to get everyone together and connected. This means you can always find somewhere to hang out whether that is in a quiet spot or in a group. They also have a massage chair too, which after a hard day walking around the city is a dream!!
One of the things we really loved was the kitchen, in some hostels it can feel like an after thought and little more than a fridge and microwave. In China especially it is rare to find a hostel that offers such an extensive kitchen. Here they have a whole section of the hostel dedicated to the kitchen and table.
It is such a lovely space to eat in too as it feels like a modern apartment and quite homely rather than the usual dirty hostel kitchen. Additional features such as lights, plugs and curtain on the beds also adds to the feeling that you are in a quality hostel who pays attention to detail. I also have to give a shout out to the lockers, probably the best we have had in a hostel! The same huge metal ones you would find in a gym which you can attach your own lock too or use the ones they provide!
Meeting new people and socialising
Hong Kong is a busy city, people flying passed you at speed and can feel sometimes hard to get beyond the surface. With Urban Pack you feel like you have found a kind of oasis in the middle of the city. A place where you can find peace and quiet but also somewhere to meet the new and interesting people this city ultimately draws in. The several areas of the hostel work well to make sure there is always someone around to chat to whether that be the friendly staff or fellow guests.
What we also loved was how much the hostel puts into getting people together and also making sure you get to see all that Hong Kong has to offer. They often organise hiking trips, nights out, meals and other trips. There is also a Watsapp group chat too where you can connect to other guests asking them if they want to meet up or if you are searching for someone to join your adventure!
A hostel that continues to grow
Stretching over several floors and buildings the guys at Urban Pack still have even grander ambitions to expand. Hoping to eventually take over more of the building and provide even more comfortable beds, facilities and diverse spaces which to enjoy your time in Hong Kong in. We look forward to seeing the development of this amazing hostel over the next few years and we are sure whatever they come up with will be innovative and impressive!
